    He also played baseball with his brothers and neighboring youngsters on the family farm. A Minnesota Twins scout found him and brought him to the country to explore a career in baseball. He was advised by his father to leave Cuba and come to America in order to “become rich and famous”.

    In the middle of the 1960s, Oliva started dating Gordette (DuBois). In 1968, they married in Hitchcock, South Dakota, and moved to Bloomington, Minnesota. All four of his children are located within a 10 miles radius of their parents, and he currently resides in a home he purchased in 1972. In addition, Oliva had four grandchildren.

    In 1961, Oliva took part in the Twins’ final three games before leaving the nation. The Twins’ minor league rosters, though, were already full. After that, he made his way to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he joined a teammate who trained with a Class A farm team for the Minnesota Twins.

    He also won over Phil Howser, the general manager of Charlotte, who made it possible for Oliva to be re-signed by the Twins and start playing in the minor league. He made his Major League Baseball debut with the Twins on September 9, 1962, batting a scorching.444 in 12 plate appearances.

    Oliva had one of the best player seasons in baseball history, earning 19 of the 20 first-place votes in the 1964 American League Player of the Year voting. Oliva received support to attend his first All-Star game during his first season.

    With a 321 average in 1965, Oliva won the AL hitting crown twice in a row, a record never before achieved in baseball. Given that his performances occurred at the start of baseball’s “second dead ball era,” they were more impressive.

    After finishing the minor league season with a.304 batting average, 23 home runs, and 74 RBI, Oliva was promoted to the major leagues for the final few games of the 1963 regular season. Oliva was almost being used as the 1964 American League Player of the Year, and he was elected to play in his first All-Star game during his first season with the Twins.

    Oliva earned his third AL hitting championship with a .337 average and the highest base percentage in the league in 1971.  In 1972, he missed all ten games, suffering summer surgery. He was the Twins’ left fielder that spring and played in that role for the team’s final four seasons due to injuries and a rule change that created a new position in the American League in 1973.

    Despite serious knee injuries that ruined his baseball career, Oliva spent his final four seasons as a designated hitter. His lifetime batting average was.304 when he left the game.

    After his playing career, Oliva worked as a coach for the Twins. He stands out from other on-field colleagues because of his role with all three Minnesota Twins World Series teams: star outfielder in 1965, hitting coach in 1987, and bench coach in 1991.
